Hilary Swank vs. Annette Bening

In 2000, Annette Bening was considered a shoo-in to score Best Actress for "American Beauty." The stars even aligned to make her look Oscar-friendly on the big night - she came to the ceremony nine months' pregnant, and cheered on as hubby Warren Beatty accepted the Irving G. Thalberg award. Then a young upstart named Hilary Swank stole the prize for her breakthrough performance in "Boys Don't Cry." Five years later, history repeated itself when Bening was up for Best Actress for "Being Julia" against Hilary Swank for "Million Dollar Baby." Bening worked the campaign trail hard and seemed every inch the more deserving nominee. The Golden Globes were split down the middle, with Bening named Best Actress - Musical/Comedy and Swank, Best Actress - Drama. Then Swank swiped the Oscar again. This "feud" continues to delight the press, to the point where some hoped there'd be a rematch this year between Swank in "Amelia" and Bening in "Mother and Child." No such luck. Or perhaps not getting drawn into another Oscar feud is lucky for these ladies.
