Pamela is an award-winning print journalist who made her debut on radio in October 2008. Prior to joining The Living Room on 938LIVE, Pam was from MediaCorp's publishing arm where she was Deputy Editor of Vanilla magazine. As a print journalist, her editorial flair and strong interview skills has won her four Journalism Awards since 2006, and numerous nominations. In 2008, her article (Her)story of Singapore (Vanilla, Aug 07) - which commemorates how far the Singapore Woman has come since 1965 - was nominated for 'Feature Story of the Year' at the MediaCorp News Awards 2008.
Journalism is a mid-career shift for this mother of two. Pam holds a Masters degree in Applied Psychology (NTU), an Honours degree in Psychology (NUS) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (NIE). She was a former English teacher in a secondary school, a Counselling Psychologist who has worked with teens and families, as well as a youth researcher with the National Youth Council.
In 2001, as a young mother, she made her foray into print journalism. Her works have been published in major newspapers and magazines, including lifestyle, business and travel publications. "The most natural form of self-expression for me is through writing," she says. "But if you were to ask me what it is I do, the word that comes to mind is storyteller. I see it as my purpose to give voice to people and issues, with the purpose of creating awareness and empowering."
In her career so far, she has interviewed politicians, celebrities, heads of global organisations and multi-national corporations, but her passion remains listening and giving voice to the stories of the ordinary person. Her professional experience as a psychologist and journalist has sharpened her listening and interviewing skills and put her in good stead as she co-hosts The Living Room, Singapore's longest-standing English 'live' interview talk show.
Away from work, Pam continues to write actively. She keeps a journal and blogs regularly at Vanilla Survivors and at Living Room Scribbles, a blog she co-founded with on-air partner, Stanley Leong. Pam is passionate about travelling, and hopes to see the world in her lifetime. She is a voracious reader, music lover, movie buff, scuba diver and a proficient drummer who previously performed with a Christian contemporary band.
Close to Pam's heart are human rights issues, especially with regards to women and children. She has volunteered with the non-profit organisation Women Make A Difference (WMD), and attended meetings with MPs to voice issues on women's rights. She has also volunteered as a mentor for Normal stream girls in her alma mater, at teenage girls' homes, and mandatory counselling sessions at a Family Service Centre.
