Sylvia Ratonel, a 22-year-old Temasek Poly graduate became the first female finalist and runner-up in the history of Singapore Idol competition in December 2009.
Sylvia did not walk away any less a winner even though she lost the Singapore Idol crown to fellow competitor Sezairi Sezali as she put up a mighty fine, diva-worthy performance at the finale before an 8,000 crowd.
Touted as "The Beautiful Talent" in this third season of Singapore Idol, this powerhouse singer, who never had professional experience, had strong vocals, confident stage presence, and notable performances throughout her Idol journey. Even judge Ken Lim asserted that Sylvia was Top 10 material in the early auditions.
After the Idol competition, Sylvia inked a management contract with MediaCorp and a recording contract with Universal Music. In 2010, Sylvia became the first local celebrity to be named the brand ambassador for international make-up brand Maybelline New York.
In the same year, Sylvia also performed on National Day and sang the Singapore anthem at the F1 Grand Prix before millions of TV viewers.
She also released her self-titled debut album which she co-wrote several songs including 2 hits singles "Fly" and "It's Raining". Both songs were well received and entered into 987FM Top 10 Chart.
Sylvia also won the Breakout Star of the Year ELLE Awards in December 2010.
