5566 accused of leveraging on Mayday’s popularity
Taiwanese rock band Mayday invited the once-popular boyband 5566 as special guests to their ‘Just Rock It’ concert on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day in Taiwan. But their kind gesture took a bad turn as the media accused the disbanded 5566 of leveraging on Mayday’s popularity.
During the concert, both bands performed a couple of 5566’s numbers together, including their classic ‘It Doesn’t Matter’. They even creatively blended 5566’s ‘I’m Sad’ with Mayday’s ‘I Don’t Want You to be Alone’, creating a combination medley ‘I Don’t Want You to be Sad Alone’.
But Taiwanese news reports the next day used ‘5566 leverages on Mayday’s popularity’ as headlines, sparking a verbal spar between fans of both bands.
5566’s fans accused Mayday of setting up a trap, while the latter’s fans insisted that their idols were merely helping their friends “in the spirit of fun”.
After video clips of the concert were posted online, some netizens pointed out that 5566 sang out of tune, off-beat and were too soft.
A spokesperson from Mayday’s record company B’in Music said: “It’s good when good musicians collaborate. Everyone should work together to bring Taiwanese music to an international level.”
