For someone who has had a lot of experience playing onscreen characters associated with upholding law and order in society (a reporter in Poetic Justice, a lawyer in Sudden and a police officer in C.L.I.F. 2 and 3), Rui En’s upcoming role as a genteel psychiatrist in Against the Tide will be a completely “fresh change.”
Save for her character’s gorgeous spring-hued pastel wardrobe palette, this role would be a drama of “many firsts” for the actress. Instead of chasing bad crooks, she’d be doing a bit of hypnotism in Against the Tide as Xueqing, a psychiatrist who is “very sensitive to people’s emotions.” In her words, she will finally have a break from chasing criminals, interrogating suspects, and slapping on copious amounts of mosquito repellent for police stakeouts at deserted forests.
“Finally!” Rui En rejoiced gleefully, at the drama’s imaging session yesterday. “Someone else [Desmond Tan] will be doing it in this show! I’m so used to doing that – having just finished filming C.L.I.F. 3 [last week], and I feel relieved,” she grinned.
Another significant “first” for Rui En in 2014, apart from being L’Oreal’s new spokesperson for their makeup range, would be working with Christopher Lee in this upcoming Ch8 drama series.
Coincidentally, both actors brought home Best Actor and Actress awards at last year’s Star Awards ceremony, and Chris is one of the few (and probably, only) veteran actor that Rui En has yet to partner in all her 12 years of acting – making it a collaboration worth keeping an eye out for.
“The circle is quite small and after a while, you'd have worked with everybody. But he’s one of the few that I’ve never worked with before,” said Rui En.
Rui En also talks to us about her other noteworthy collaborations (i.e., her pairings with other actors nominated for Favourite Onscreen Couple award) and lets us in on her personal favourite pairing among the trio.
