Veteran Hong Kong actress Ada Choi’s husband, Max Zhang, won the Best Supporting Male Actor at the recent Hong Kong Film Awards, and made a touching speech on stage which earned him praise from many.

Although the couple have been together for 11 years and are married with two children, Max has always been outshone by his wife, whose stellar performance in the Hong Kong TV industry often stirred talk that he is dependent on her to rise to fame.

Having started out in showbiz as a martial artist and stuntman, Max was often only known as ‘Ada’s husband’, instead of being known in his own right.

On Sunday night, when he received his award and gave his thank-you speech, he declared: “Some people say I have to depend on her (Ada) my whole life, but let me tell everyone, that’s right. I’m dependent on her for a lifetime of happiness.”

Ada, who was sitting in the audience, was so moved by this speech that she started tearing up.

During an interview with the media later, Max told reporters: “Many people don’t know who I am, and they may say why Ada’s husband is dependent on her? But now I don’t really worry about such talk, because I believe that hard work can earn people’s respect.”

When he was told that netizens were very pleased with his touching declaration on stage, he revealed that he had done many of these things for her. For instance, a year after they got married, on Ada’s birthday, he actually secretly recorded a Cantonese rap and requested for the flight captain to play it on Ada’s flight. The lyrics went: “Ada, you are so innocent, if your husband loves you he will marry you, and everything I have is yours.”

The couple also has their fair share of a romantic love story. It is known that Max had professed his love for Ada three times before she accepted him, with the conditions of ‘no holding hands, no kissing and not going public with their relationship.’

After dating for four years, the couple tied finally tied the knot in 2008 and went public with their relationship.
