Ah Bengs and Ah Lians who made it big in showbiz: Attitude brings you a long way in the industry, especially if you have one as striking as these louder-than-life personalities
Ah Bengs and Ah Lians form a unique cluster of people that are deeply seeded in the fabric of Singapore and can be found virtually everywhere. At the coffee shops, in offices, schools and even in showbiz… Thanks to two local movies (Ah Boys to Men 1 & 2) that documented the mandatory rite of passage experienced by all Singapore sons (National Service), a handful of such bengs have been making waves of late.
Yes, we’re talking about Tosh Zhang, Wang Weiliang, Noah Yap and their band of Ah Boys to Men (ABTM) brothers who can be spotted all over bus stop ads, red carpet walks, charity shows, and even at the National Day Parade 2013 show. The boys will continue to populate your screens over the next two years thanks to a recent collaboration between FLY entertainment and JM Artistes Network which aims to develop them into all-rounded entertainers and bring them to markets beyond Singapore.
Because the force of the beng has never been this strong, we look back on this particular group of people who have made it big in showbiz. Don’t play, play, ah!
