C.L.I.F. 2 is 2013’s most-watched Ch8 drama
We can count with one hand the number of local dramas that have been given an additional boost of longevity with returning sequels: ‘90s hit drama The Unbeatables, The Journey (a trilogy series) and police drama series, C.L.I.F., which is returning for a third installment this April. Its predecessor C.L.I.F. 2 is the most-watched Ch8 drama of 2013, and if these numbers (901,000-strong average viewership) are anything to go by – it highlights the enduring appeal of this popular police series.
Coming in second place is The Dream Makers, a drama series on showbiz which attracted an average reach of 885,000. Featuring a star-studded cast of Zoe Tay, Chen Liping, Chen Hanwei, Rui En and Jeanette Aw, this show offered viewers an insider peek into the television industry and recently topped the Star Awards 2014 nominee list with 19 nominations. This mid-year blockbuster is also the top-performing series in terms of online video streams on Toggle and xinmsn’s catch-up TV, raking in an average of 80,030 streams per episode.
Year-end blockbuster The Journey: A Voyage, It’s a Wonderful Life and Break Free are tied in third place for most-watched Ch8 drama series, attracting an average of 835,000 viewers respectively.
Other drama series that have performed well online (on both Toggle and xinmsn’s catch-up TV) are ChU’s The Recruit Diaries and Ch8’s Gonna Make It, coming in second (75,580 average streams) and third place (69,420 average streams) respectively.
Lighted-hearted series Say It!, which is led by the bilingual Pornsak, Chua Enlai and Vivian Lai, took the top spot of most-watched variety show with an average viewership of 768,000; it is followed by The Joy Truck and Laughing Out Loud. Variety specials centered on the annual Star Awards ceremony also performed extremely well with an average viewership of 1.66 million.
In 2014, look out for these shows: The second installment of The Journey: Tumultuous Times, which continues with the second generation struggling through a period of uncertainty and poverty; Finding 8, a mega treasure hunt series where artistes must find designated objects in a specific timeframe; and C.L.I.F. 3, which is set to debut April 9 (Wed), 9pm on Ch8.
