It’s a tale as old as time: boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love –an inevitable element that never fails to happen between two parties of the opposite sex on both the small and silver screen, whether said event makes any major contribution to the general storyline at all.

As Harry Burns famously quoted in 1989’s When Harry Met Sally, “men and women can’t be friends”. But is that statement really true? We managed to suss out several platonic twosomes who, despite their opposing genders (and heterosexuality), did not go down Hollywood’s obligatory hook-up route – or at least, not during their screen time:
