What would you think if you had to call Dennis Chew (in drag) and Richard Low “mum and dad”?
For Benjamin Kheng, who is taking over Joshua Tan’s role as Ken Chow in Running Into The Sun’s Ah Boys to Men: The Musical, it’s a combination that amuses him to no end. The young musician, one-fourth of local indie band The Sam Willows, couldn’t help but chuckle while talking about his onstage parents.
“It’s so weird!” he exclaimed during our interview at the Goodman Arts Centre, where he and the rest of the cast had just rehearsed two numbers, ‘Tekong Tekan’ and ‘Cheong or Geng’. “It’s really, really funny because both of them [Dennis and Richard] make such an odd couple.”
Jokes and laughter aside, Benjamin was also quick to praise the popular Love 97.2FM DJ. “He finds something new to do in every scene, which is important in theatre because you have to come up with something fresh every day,” he raved. “He’s so quick on his feet – he is a radio DJ after all, and he’s a great guy to work with.”
This isn’t Dennis’ first stint as the mummy of a National Service recruit – in 2012, he made waves as Mrs. Png, the screaming, overprotective mother of Dwayne Tan’s character Malcolm in Army Daze. He reported that he’s having a lot of fun getting ready to step into the shoes of Mrs. Chow for the Ah Boys musical, and is enjoying his first time working with Benjamin.
