First-time nominees break into SA2014 Top 20
It’s that time of the year again, where fans go all out with frantic and fervent voting to get their beloved local stars into the Star Awards Top 20 Most Popular Artistes. Just like the past two years, this year’s Star Awards 20 Top 20 Most Popular Artistes will be selected from a combination of 50% telepoll voting and 50% online voting.
The results from the first round of voting (as of Monday, March 24 at 2pm) have been revealed, and we see an impressive influx of new blood on the list.
Supporters of Zhang Zhen Huan, Xu Bin, Ian Fang and Desmond Tan have certainly proven themselves as forces to be reckoned with – despite it being the first time the four actors are running for Most Popular Male Artiste, fans’ votes have already propelled them off to a good head start, with all of them securing spots in the combined results.
Established fan favourites and last year’s winners Dennis Chew, Elvin Ng, Lee Teng and Pornsak survived the first round of voting as well.
Zhen Huan, Xu Bin and Desmond, all of whom will be co-starring in Ch8’s year-end thriller Against the Tide, also managed to make it in the online voting results. However, despite a young and internet-savvy following, Ian, soon to be seen as a basketball player in Tay Ping Hui’s directorial debut Meeting the Giant, is a surprising no-show here.
On the flipside, Dai Xiang Yu and Pierre Png racked up plenty of online support, but didn’t garner enough telepoll votes to break into the combined results. Edwin Goh, who was also unveiled as a first-time contender in the Top 20, has yet to be found on either tally (the keyword, fans, is “yet”).
