Former MediaCorp actor Chen Wencong dies of pneumonia
UPDATED (6 December 2012, 9:30AM)
After a successful battle against leukemia last year following his bone marrow operation, MediaCorp executive producer and ex-local actor Chen Wencong was well on the road to recovery. Said to be recuperating from his illness for the past year, it was understood that his body was susceptible to infection due to a weak immune system.
The local producer's illness took a turn for the worse and he passed away this afternoon at 12.05pm at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH). He was admitted to SGH a month ago and had been warded in the Intensive Care Unit for the past two weeks.
Wencong’s sudden departure left many of his showbiz friends in shock.
Fellow actress and work colleague Apple Hong broke the news on her microblog this afternoon and wrote: "My best male friend was declared dead by the hospital this afternoon. I thought we could meet for one last time when I fly back to Singapore tonight, but it is too late. My dear friend, I will forever remember the good in you; your courage; your wisdom; and everything else about you. Rest in peace..."
Apple, who’s currently based in Beijing, shared her sadness with xinmsn over Whatsapp and said that she last saw Wencong before she left for Beijing. Upset that she did not manage to visit him before he passed on, Apple added, "He fought a brave battle against Leukemia and was constantly in high spirits and was filled with determination to take the illness down. I did not expect for him to not make it through this hurdle."
Wencong's wife commented on her husband's death via a message communicated through Apple, and said, "One thing I'd like to make very, very clear - BC [Wencong] won his battle against leukemia. He succumbed to pneumonia due to compromised immunity."
"He had no regrets and accomplished all that he had wanted to. He passed away peacefully with me and [our] family by his side," she concluded.
