Frankie Gao dies from leukemia at 63
Taiwanese veteran singer Frankie Gao (Gao Ling Feng) died from leukemia yesterday at the age of 63. He was admitted to the hospital in November 2012 due to blood poisoning.
After going through three sessions of chemotherapy, he felt that the treatment tired him too much, and decided to give it up, choosing to rest at home and recuperate through changes in diet.
Just 10 days away from his 64th birthday, he passed away at the New Taipei City Xindian Tzu Chi General Hospital. His ex-wife Chin Youzhuang and son rushed to the hospital to see him for the last time.
Frankie shot to fame after singing the theme song ‘Big Eyes’ for the movie Girlfriend. His other memorable songs include ‘The Lady’s Dimple’, ‘A Fire in Winter’ and ‘Misty Rain’.
His unique vocals also triggered imitations from other celebrities, and he subsequently started hosting.
Frankie married thrice – he divorced his first wife Lin Yuzhao after 10 years, and subsequently married Chinese beauty queen Wen Jie. The pair had a daughter named Ge Xiaojie, but their marriage only lasted for three years.
He once admitted that the divorce was the lowest point of his life, as Wen Jie was his favourite wife.
In 2011, his third wife Chin Youzhuang was photographed kissing another man in a car, which resulted in their divorce in 2012. The divorce also resulted in an unresolved debt of NT37 million (S$1.56 million).
When he arrived in Singapore for a performance last November, he appeared optimistic, having come to terms with his illness.
