Veteran singer Frankie Gao was back again in Singapore for a performance on New Year's Day, but his health seems to have taken a turn for the worse when he threw up blood in his hotel. The 63-year-old has been suffering from leukemia.

After his performance, Frankie took two sleeping pills before going to bed. But he woke up at 6am and started to throw up blood. “I found myself in a pool of blood, and thought I was dreaming,” he told reporters.

But he has since come to terms with it his illness. “I’m already numb to the pain, so this is nothing,” he said.

“After undergoing immune-cell therapy (a cancer therapy), the good and bad cells in my body are waging a war. After the cancerous cells die, there’s too much toxic blood, so they came out,” he added.

After a medical examination last month which revealed that the cancerous cells are spreading rapidly throughout his body, he remained stubbornly optimistic. “I will still be alive to meet everyone this year and next,” he said.

He also recently had a family gathering with his grandchildren and children, all from his three former wives. It was a heartwarming affair for Frankie, who said: “I have a large family, so I’m not afraid of loneliness.”

Frankie revealed that he intends to undergo an intravenous immunoglobulin treatment (a blood product administered intravenously that contains antibodies extracted from the plasma of over one thousand blood donors) in Jilin next month.
