G.E.M Tang fails to clinch championship for ‘I Am a Singer 2’
The second season of popular Chinese singing competition ‘I am a Singer’ held its finals on Friday, and though high hopes have been placed on rising star G.E.M Tang, she lost the champion position to Chinese singer Han Lei and was placed second instead.
However, if the Hong Kong singer songwriter was disappointed, she did not show it. “I think I did better than expected, so I’m very happy,” she told the media. “There’s no stress during the competition, and it’s better than the rehearsals ‘cause there’s so many people in the audience, so I was quite high!”
She confessed that she had simply wanted to get into the top three, and felt that it was a glorious defeat. G.E.M praised Han Lei for singing well and said that she still had a lot to learn.
She had performed the song ‘Cun Tian Li’ (‘In Summer’) with guest star Khalil Fong – one accompanied with the guitar while the other was at the piano – and when she reached the climax, many in the audience were moved to tears.
G.E.M will hold her own concert in Beijing after the competition. “I feel that I’m very lucky, as after the Hung Hom concert last year, I was thinking of doing commercial performances, but I suddenly got an invitation from ‘I Am a Singer’, and that enabled more people to get to know me. I’m very thankful to God and Hunan TV,” she said.
However, she admitted that she did not know about the ticket sales for the concert, as they are handled by her management.
She also denied rumours that Hunan TV has offered her a large sum of remuneration to work for the company. “It’s not true. I don’t have such an agreement,” she said.
Has she recovered from her recent break up with Yoga Lin? Will she put relationship matters away for now to focus on her career?
“I will definitely focus on my career,” she agreed. “But it doesn’t mean that I will not think about romance. As I still want to continue composing, I need to date to get inspiration.”
