“It’s a story about jerks who learn to love themselves and how to be heroes.” These were director James Gunn’s words about the newest Marvel superhero flick on the block, Guardians of the Galaxy.
The movie follows the journey of five “jerks” – alien assassin Gamora (Zoe Saldana), talking tree bark Groot (Vin Diesel), talking raccoon Rocket (Bradley Cooper), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), and Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), a human who was raised in space.
Zoe, Dave and James were just in town for the movie’s Southeast Asian tour, and they sure were a trio of popular “jerks” – after attending a press conference on Thursday, they were welcomed by hordes of screaming fans at the movie’s red carpet at Shaw House yesterday.
Some Marvel die-hards arrived dressed as their favourite Guardians of the Galaxy character (there was even a real-life Groot accompanied by a stuffed Rocket) while others showed their dedication by camping at the event venue since 7am.
The enthusiastic response from fans had Dave exclaiming in an interview with xinmsn, “It’s a little weird, and a little overwhelming.”
James also boldly proclaimed his love for our island nation: “I really love being here; I love the people of Singapore.”
“It’s great because I think that we’ve made a movie that speaks to people not only from where I’m from, but all over the world. That’s really what the Guardians of the Galaxy is about. It’s about how, underneath it all, we’re all very similar,” he added.
Zoe displayed her sweet side, in contrast with the tough-as-nails Gamora, as she gushed about how glad she was to be here: “It feels great! Because I got to work with an amazing filmmaker and an amazing cast, I got to be in space, and do what I love to do, which is acting.”
