Huang Wenyong dies of cancer, aged 60

Veteran actor Huang Wenyong, 60, passed away from lymphoma at 5pm today.

According to his manager, the MediaCorp artiste, who had been in and out of the hospital for treatment these past few months, checked into Singapore General Hospital about a week ago. He died with his wife, son and daughter by his side.

Wenyong first sparked concerns over his health last November, when he was photographed looking pale and haggard at Ch8's 30th Drama Anniversary Show. However, he clarified that his appearance was the result of stomach flu, and not having enough time to recover fully due to a hectic schedule and irregular meals.

Just last month, he also took to online portal Toggle to assure fans: "I am well. All my friends who are concerned about me; please do not worry." He thanked everyone for their well wishes and urged them to take care of their own health.

Not long after he released the audio clip, Wenyong was the subject of a death hoax on a local forum. The thread was titled "Huang Wen Yong passes away", followed by a post saying, "... in Army Series (1983), anyone still remember?"

The joke did not sit well with other netizens, sparking outrage among other users.

Wenyong's illustrious career began in 1980. To date, he has starred in over 100 Chinese dramas and sitcoms and bagged numerous awards, including the Special Achievement Award at the 1997 Star Awards, and more recently, a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Joys of Life at the 2013 Star Awards.

The actor has also been in the running for the Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes since 1997.

There will be a five-day wake for the actor. His family has declined to be interviewed at press time.

MediaCorp has issued a short statement, mourning the passing of Wenyong, one of its most beloved and endearing actors.

"Wenyong joined the then SBC in 1980 and was one of the early pioneers of local Chinese drama.  To date, he has acted in over 100 Chinese dramas and sitcoms.  In his over 30-year career with MediaCorp, he won numerous awards including "Special Achievement Award" in Star Awards 1997 and the most recent "Top 10 Favourite Male Artist Award" in Star Awards 2011.

Wenyong will be dearly missed by everyone in MediaCorp - as a professional craftsman, a beloved colleague and a true friend."

Huang Wenyong was last seen on TV in It's a Wonderful Life.
