Local actress May Phua has decided to ring the curtain down on her 19 years of showbiz career, when her contract with MediaCorp expires at the end of the month.

The mother of two boys, aged nine and five, confirmed the news during a phone interview with xinmsn yesterday evening. “It’s time for a change in lifestyle. Acting was my first job and it has given me a lot of joy over the past 19 years,” said May.

After much deliberation and discussion with her husband, the actress chose to devote herself into becoming a full-time mother.

“I have many things to handle at home, but I can’t fully take care of my family due to the nature of my work,” she explained.

As her husband often travels overseas for work, May feels that it is more appropriate to have at least one parent at home to look after the kids.

To spend more time with her family, the actress reached an agreement with the company to reduce her workload, when she renewed her contract two years ago. In 2013, May starred in blockbuster drama The Dream Makers and Love at Risk, and this year, she only took up a minor role in The Caregivers.

May acted as a tomboy in Ch8's The Caregivers.

Despite so, the irregular filming hours remained challenging for the dedicated mum to balance her time between work and family. “Everyone has different needs at different stages in life. Now that I can have 100% control of my time, I would able to send my sons to their extracurricular lessons on my own,” May added.

A self-proclaimed perfectionist, the acclaimed thespian admitted that she becomes easily anxious where her children are concerned. With her elder son entering Primary Four next year, her priority is to help him with his schoolwork.

“I need to sit beside him when he is doing homework. Even though I can’t commit to anything else when I do that, I have to do it so that he would not start daydreaming,” she shared.

And that’s not all she would do for her sons. In order to update herself with the current school curriculum, May has eagerly signed up for educational courses specially designed for parents.

While she declined to reveal further details, May also let on that she has invested in a business venture with her good friends.
