The appearance of the late, great Michael Jackson in season three's 'Stark Raving Dad' proved to be a real coup for show, with the singer playing a mental patient befriended by Homer who believes he's The King of Pop. Jackson - credited in the episode as John Jay Smith - surprised creator Matt Groening by calling him up to tell him he was a fan of the show, and began pitching a string of ideas, as well as an original song written for Lisa's birthday.

Jackson also wrote Bart's 1990 novelty hit 'Do The Bartman' which, although never officially released in the United States, reached number 1 in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway and the United Kingdom.
