Movies that are based on or inspired by true stories are hot property right now, if the Best Picture nominations for this year’s upcoming Academy Awards are any indication. Two-thirds of the nine contenders, including Captain Phillips, The Wolf of Wall Street, and American Hustle, took cues from real people and events.

However, reel-life counterparts have a notorious history of adding, taking away, changing or completely ignoring certain details, as we will see in these following “based on a true story” flicks:
