Speculations arise following Julian Cheung’s Best Actor loss
The 2013 TVB Anniversary Awards ceremony on Monday was a night of snubs and surprises but Dayo Wong’s triumph over hot favourite Julian Cheung for the Best Actor trophy had to be the biggest upset of the night.
The Hong Kong media speculated that the main reason for Julian’s loss is due to his microblog posts last year, which offended the TVB management. Insiders claimed that the company was displeased with the actor’s complaints about having his parts edited out in acclaimed drama Triumph in the Skies II.
Meanwhile, sources also revealed that Julian’s co-star Francis Ng, who was vying for the same award, had diluted the actor’s votes.
On stage to receive the “Most Popular Male Character” award, Julian, who reportedly turned down a lucrative assignment to attend the awards ceremony, hinted at his disappointment in his acceptance speech. “The viewers love me. Does TVB not like me?” he asked.
However, the well-loved actor explained in an interview after the show that he was merely cracking a joke, while expressing his wish to continue working with TVB. Having previously promised to give his wife, actress Anita Yuen, a present should he fail to bring home the award, Julian made good on his word and put on a bracelet for her on the spot.
