The adventurers
It’s a lot of fun watching the company of dwarves gather at Bag End at the beginning of The Hobbit. Their jolly banter is infectious and Bilbo’s dismay at the attack on his larder is hilarious. But it’s impossible to know who all 13 of them are and there’s an awful lot of singing. Surely, the Fellowship that sets out from Rivendell in the first LOTR is more intriguing – a mixed group of fully developed characters with the future of the world depending on them.
