Weâre not about to start deciding which of Tolkienâs works is the better of the two. But Jacksonâs approach changes dramatically between the two. Where with The Lord Of The Rings he was cutting away material that didnât serve the film, in The Hobbit he is using Tolkienâs appendices and a few imaginations of his own team to bulk out a single book into three long films. Itâs when it strays from the source material that The Hobbit can come across somewhat aimless.
