We’re not about to start deciding which of Tolkien’s works is the better of the two. But Jackson’s approach changes dramatically between the two. Where with The Lord Of The Rings he was cutting away material that didn’t serve the film, in The Hobbit he is using Tolkien’s appendices and a few imaginations of his own team to bulk out a single book into three long films. It’s when it strays from the source material that The Hobbit can come across somewhat aimless.
