The topic of weight turned out to be an unusually common talking point at this year’s Starhub TVB Awards.
It all started on the Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre’s “green carpet” earlier in the evening, when the infamously frank Pauline Lan revealed that she teasingly asked Lady First cast mate Vee Yi, who had supposedly gained a few pounds, if she was pregnant.
“I know the food in Singapore is great, but that shouldn’t be an excuse!” the Favourite TVB Variety Show Host champ laughed. She later elaborated during a one-on-one interview with xinmsn: “Singapore is such a cultural melting pot that it should be easy to find all kinds of weight-friendly dishes.”
She recommended hot and sour Thai cuisine, one of her personal favourites. “The spiciness digests better and won’t affect your weight as much as say, creamy dishes, which I don’t really like,” she explained. Other types of food to avoid are heaty or starchy fare.
Pauline also emphasised on the importance of exercise, citing swimming and brisk-walking as her activities of choice.
The subject came up again – albeit a bit more subtly – when Best TVB Female Newcomer winner Christine Kuo showed up in an unflattering tube dress. Throughout the night, we couldn’t help but overhear sharp comments and murmurs regarding her appearance, ranging from “Is she pregnant?” to “OMG, she’s huge!”
