Last night, the internet buzzed with news of Park Bom’s alleged drug smuggling case four years ago. In a report by KBS News, the 2NE1 member was caught for attempting to bring in approximately 80 amphetamine pills into Korea from the United States in Oct 2010.

Amphetamines are strong central nervous system stimulants that are sometimes used to treat conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Although they are used for medicinal purposes in some countries, distribution of the drug is banned in Korea.

Park Bom’s case in 2010 was later dropped as her medical records from a university hospital in the US proved that she was prescribed the drug during her time there.

After this piece of news abruptly broke yesterday, YG Entertainment’s CEO Yang Hyun Suk released a personal statement to address the issue.

“2NE1 is busy with their world tour right now and I haven’t seen Park Bom in a while. But last night, I saw Park Bom crying all night because of the reports. I was conflicted on whether to talk about something from her past that she wouldn’t wish to bring up,” he said.

When asked on his reasons for releasing a personal statement instead of an official one from YG Entertainment, Yang Hyun Suk explained that he was personally told of the incident by Park Bom’s parents four years ago, and that it was something which was unknown to everyone else in the company, including the other 2NE1 members.

He continued: “As fans may already know, Park Bom grew up in the US before her debut and dreamt of becoming a soccer player. During one soccer match, she witnessed the death of a teammate on the field.”

The traumatic incident caused her to fall into depression and for several years afterwards, she received counselling and treatment from a university hospital in the States, where she was prescribed the medication.

Scarred by the painful memory, Park Bom stopped playing football and returned to Korea to audition at YG. Although she was rejected for two consecutive years, she finally came out tops among all applicants at her third try, leaving a deep impression on Yang Hyun Suk.

“I first met Park Bom 11 years ago, but I only found out about [the incident] from her father four years ago. It is a past that she does not want to recollect, and yet this has become a situation where I have no choice but to reveal it,” he added.

According to Yang Hyun Suk, Park Bom was unable to return to the States in recent years due to her busy schedule and thus, she got her mother and grandmother to send the medication via post, unaware that amphetamines are prohibited in Korea. Since then, the singer has been using another medication prescribed by a local hospital.

At the end of his statement, Yang Hyun Suk apologised for causing worry and promised to return with more positive news soon.
