Zhang Yimou may be fined up to RMB$160 million for having seven kids
Rumour has it that Zhang Yimou fathered seven children from his four previous relationships and may face a fine of up to RMB$160 million (approximately S$32 million) for breaching China’s one-child policy.
According to the Chinese media, the renowned Chinese director has a daughter with his first wife Xiao Hua. After his divorce with her in 1990, Yimou reportedly married a woman from Jiangsu named Chen Ting, who is 30 years his junior. Despite attempting to keep his marriage a secret, their relationship was exposed by the Chinese media and it was confirmed that the couple has two sons and a daughter.
It was recently speculated that the 61-year-old also has four other children from relationships with two other unnamed woman, amounting to a total of seven children.
According to China’s family planning laws, every household can only have a maximum of one child. Anyone caught breaking the policy must pay a “social compensation fee” based on their annual income. Based on Yimou’s annual income, the director may have to pay up to RMB$160 million (approximately S$32 million).
The director has yet to comment on these reports at press time.
