Japan porn firms threaten piracy lawsuit in Taiwan

"My clients suffered huge losses because they cannot collect royalties for the adult videos," said lawyer Michael Chien, adding the estimated loss was at least one billion Taiwan dollars (31 million US) a year.

"Screening and selling the videos without authorisation is unacceptable. Taiwan should do more to protect intellectual property rights," Chien said.

The eight companies, which together account for about a third of Japan's adult video market, demanded the Taiwanese firms to pay royalties and remove any unlicensed videos within a month or risk legal action, he said.

They have identified Taiwan's two largest cellular operators -- Chunghwa Telecom and Taiwan Mobile -- among the alleged copyright violators.
