Beyoncé has felt musically ''liberated'' by motherhood.

The singer - who has a 23-month-old daughter Blue Ivy with husband Jay Z - recently released her self-titled fifth album with no promotion, and she has admitted to becoming more comfortable with some of the more personal lyrics.

Speaking to fans via her Instagram account at a screening for the album's accompanying music videos, the star revealed becoming a mother helped her open up more on record.

She said: ''I'm very private and I'm very respectful, and I think it just took me no longer being someone's child - once I became a mother, I felt like I could tear those fourth walls and I just felt like it was time. I completely feel liberated.''

The record's unique format - which include music videos for each of its 14 tracks - was a risk but came from being bored after her album '4' from 2011.

She explained: ''I was terrified. I was so scared. I already envisioned like the worst things that could happen ... Honestly I was at a point where I felt like, you know, everything feels the same.

''That's how I felt and if I could not challenge that, then maybe it's time for me to do something else or develop more artists, which is something I want to do.''
