The Thieves is off to a healthy start in ticket sales in China.
After premiering in theaters in China on January 15, the movie went on to earn 18.6 million Yuan in ticket sales (approximately 32 billion won).
The Thieves is the first Korean movie to show this year in China and premiered in 3,000 theaters around the nation through the Chinese distribution agency, China Film.
As the successful opening week in sales show, The Thieves has scored the highest earning for a Korean movie to date in China only after the movie Late Autumn.
Producers for The Thieves shared, “Director Choi Dong Hoon, Kim Yoon Suk and Jun Ji Hyun really gave their all in promoting the movie in China by appearing in interviews and events. And with part of the film being set in China along with some of the best Korean and Chinese actors, it helped to attract Chinese moviegoers.”
The movie premiered in North America in October and earned critical acclaim from The New York Times and other critics.
The Thieves is also looking to show in Japan, India, Spain and Russia in the near future.
