What reportedly happened: Block B visited Thailand shortly after it was hit by floods in early 2012. During a video interview, the interviewer brought up the disaster, to which leader Zico replied, “I know that many people have had a hard time due to the flooding. With monetary aid, we hope they will feel better. The only thing we have is money.” After which, he laughed and added that he had less than S$10 with him.
The aftermath: The interview was widely translated and Korean netizens expressed their shame at his insensitive comments. 2PM’s Thai member, Nickhun, criticised them on his Twitter and was soon joined by other celebrities. The members subsequently posted official apologies and Zico shaved his head as a sign of remorse.
Our two cents: Block B’s seemingly harmless comment made in jest sparked a huge controversy, especially when the Thais were still recovering from the crippling flood. While their comments did not warrant a death sentence, young idols should learn from their mistakes and be mindful of their words.
