JYJ and SM finally reach agreement
After years of legal feuds, SM Entertainment and JYJ, the male trio that used to be a part of the SM’s five-member boy band TVXQ, have an agreement.
Yesterday at a voluntary arbitration at the Seoul Central District Court, SM finally agreed that its contract ended July 31, 2009, and that it would no longer interfere with JYJ’s endeavors in Korea. The giant K-pop agency said it had decided to settle to stop the bad publicity from spilling over onto TVXQ, which still remains as a duo.
In 2009, Yuchun, Jaejoong and Junsu left TVXQ and its 13-year contract with SM and asked for an injunction citing “unfair practices” as the reason. The court was on JYJ’s side, but SM challenged the decision twice.
Through the three-year-long battle, Sejong, the law firm representing JYJ, believes the trio had reshaped and improved industry standards. “The way that agencies look at their artists has changed because of JYJ,” said the law firm. Meanwhile CJeS head Back Chang-ju said that despite the closure, he didn’t think it would be any easier for JYJ to land gigs on terrestrial networks, because of the power SM wields in the industry.
