You gotta hand it to Psy – this guy sure knows how to work a crowd.
The chubby-cheeked South Korean rap singer drove over 4,000 fans wild at his first public showcase in Singapore last night at Marina Bay Sands’ Event Plaza.
“You guys are gonna be a witness (to) my first time performing in Singapore,” yelled Psy, whose real name is Park Jae-Sang, in American-accented English. “And I’m really happy because I’m not just gonna sing ‘Gangnam Style’, I’m gonna sing my other songs too, which means I can show you my 12-year Korean career.”
“’Gangnam Style’ was the single of my sixth album and all of a sudden, this song came out so big… So right now, I’m doing a performance in Singapore all of a sudden [sic],” the 34-year-old continued, to cheers and applause from the sea of fans young and old.
In the next 20 minutes he took and dominated the stage, the pop sensation rapped and belted out three hits, including “Champion” and “Right Now”, before a screaming audience.
Saving the best for the last and of course drawing the loudest shrieks was “Gangnam Style” – the strangely infectious tune (and horse dance) that’s propelled him to worldwide fame.
“If you don’t show me energy, I’m not gonna show you energy,” he threatened the crowd at one point, teasing and cracking them up at another – when he jokingly asked fangirls if they were “drunk” after they enthusiastically, almost hysterically, exclaimed, “Oppa, saranghae! (I love you!)"
Much to the delight of fans, Psy also promised his return to Singapore next year with the release of his new single and album in March.
“I’ll be here and I’m definitely gonna do a concert in Singapore, so please be there next March. I love you all; Singapore, thank you!” he yelled, ending off the night with a bang.
