Running Man’s popularity across Asia is unrivalled.
Trust me when I say that: I know of friends and colleagues who can’t tell Choi Siwon (Super Junior member) from G-Dragon (BIG BANG member) and SNSD from 2NE1, yet they are familiar with the names (and even nicknames) of all seven Running Man members.
Tickets to the show’s first Singapore fan meet sold out within one day and more than 4,000 fans flocked to Jurong Point yesterday afternoon for an autograph session with its cast members. This Korean variety show decidedly appeals to people from all walks of life – K-pop fan or not.
In the Singapore Expo hall, where the fan meet was held, people streamed in with their mums, dads, and even grandparents (we even spotted Xiang Yun at the event with her two kids and elderly mum – how cute!). The venue was filled with fans decked in official merchandise wear and Velcro-name-tagged t-shirts.
At 7.45pm when suddenly the electro tunes of T-Max’s iconic hit song ‘Almost Paradise’ blared across the venue, the 3,000-strong crowd shrieked in delight. Many keeled over in laughter at the video montage featuring the quintet as characters from Boys Over Flowers (the Korean remake of Hana Yori Dango).
