How I Spent My Summer Vacation

How I Spent My Summer Vacation: Is this finally the film that will mark the return of Hollywood's reigning social pariah Mel Gibson? Co-written by Gibson with director Adrian Grunberg (who was Gibson's first assistant director on Apocalypto), this self-funded movie is skipping the theatrical release in the United States altogether and set to be released directly through the increasingly popular video-on-demand format and DirecTV. It will have cinematic release in various overseas markets though.

The film tells the story of an amoral career criminal (Gibson as the unnamed "Driver") who gets caught by authorities and sent to a bizarre Mexican drug- and crime-filled jail-town, where he learns how to survive with the help of a 10-year-old boy. The film promises a return to what Gibson does best - playing the wise-cracking loose cannon a la Martin Riggs from Lethal Weapon - with plenty of on-screen violence, black humour and 90 pacy minutes of unrelenting storytelling. But will it herald Mel's return? We have a feeling he's too far adrift to ever paddle back.
