Dia Frampton – RED
Text: Sherman Yang
With another album titled Red (no, it’s not Taylor Swift or Ne-Yo), the runner up of Season 1 of The Voice, Dia Frampton launches her debut solo album. One thing this songwriter has in common with Swift though is the penning of breakup songs. Frampton wrote ‘Daniel’ for … wait for it … Daniel, whom she broke up with before entering the competition. The raw vocal which you hear on the track is actually from the very first demo of the song.
Frampton also performs a duet with her mentor Blake Shelton in ‘I Will’. Unlike his recent screaming competition with Christina Aguilera on ‘Just A Fool’, which is currently number 2 on the 987FM top 20 Chart (11 Jan – 17 Jan), the duet proves that the relationship between the pair has indeed blossomed during The Voice. The similarity in their music styles results in a perfect blend of their voices.
Taking risks on the album, ‘Billy The Kid’ has a more electronic feel to it. The beats and arrangement transforms Dia’s voice into one you might actually hear on the dancefloor. If you feel that the track has some similarities to material from Foster The People, it might be because Mark Foster co-wrote and produced the track.
‘Don’t Kick The Chair’ has a simple but catchy chorus which would get you singing along to her beautiful vocal runs. The unlikely featuring of Kid Cudi rapping on the track somehow works in this case making the song more relevant in today’s music scene
Frampton has managed to find a good mix of pop and country styles on the album making it a great easy-listening. Collaborating with other renowned songwriters and producers Isabella Summers (Florence & the Machine), Tom Shapiro, Kid Cudi, Mark Foster (Foster the People) and several others, the album is a definite must-have.
