In NBA basketball,

The Los Angeles Lakers allowed an 18-point lead to be cut down to just 1, as they struggled to beat Detroit 98-97.

In Michigan this morning, Pau Gasol scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the visitors while Kobe Bryant added 18.

Kobe made a 3-point play for the Lakers to help his team claim their 5th triumph in 6 games.

Over to Italian football action,

Mario Balotelli scored twice on his debut as Milan went on to beat Udinese 2-1.

Having joined the former Serie A champions from Manchester City last week, the Italian striker immediately proved to be an instant sensation with the home fans at the San Siro
Stadium this morning.

With the win, Milan are in 4th place and 12 points behind Juventus.

The league leaders were themselves 2-1 winners in Chievo.

And Juve hold a 3-point lead over Napoli.

In other selected results,

Lazio remain in 3rd spot and 9 points off the lead after losing 3-2 in Genoa,

Inter Milan are still in joint 4th place after losing 3-1 in Siena, while Fiorentina completes the top 6, after their 2-0 win over Parma.

Over in the English Premier League,

Roberto Mancini says, even though Manchester City are 9 points off the lead, the title race is still not over.

Last night, Sergio Aguero rescued the home side with his 78th minute equaliser for the final score at the Etihad Stadium, Man City 2 Liverpool 2.

And with 13 games remaining, the Citizens are 9 points behind leaders Manchester United.

But Mancini feels that United could drop valuable points as they compete in 3 campaigns over the next 3 months.

Meanwhile,

Tottenham Hotspur are just 1 point 3rd-ranked Chelsea, after their 1-0 win over West Brom.

The matchwinner at the Hawthorns came from Gareth Bale after 67 minutes.
