Chelsea bounce back from Club World Cup defeat to reach League Cup semis!

In English football action,

Chelsea are through to the semi-finals of the League Cup.

And that's after thrashing Leeds United 5-1 in this morning's quarterfinal fixture at Elland Road.

5 players scored for the Blues including Juan Mata and Fernando Torres.

And with the win, Chelsea will next meet Swansea while Bradford take on Aston Villa in the other semi-final.

Still on English football,

Raheem Sterling has reached an agreement in principle with Liverpool over a new contract.

The England under-18 international is expected to sign a 5-year deal before Christmas.

Sterling, who is currently on a US$3,000 dollar salary per week youth contract, will see his earnings initially jump to around $50,000 per week.

Still on the EPL,

Mario Balotelli has accepted a fine of 2 weeks' wages from Manchester City.

That's after withdrawing his appeal against disciplinary action taken by the Premier League champions.

The controversial Italian striker, who was fined by City after a series of well-documented incidents on and off the pitch last season, had been due to have his case heard by a
Premier League panel.

But last night's hearing was cancelled as a result of amicable talks between the player and the club.

The 2 weeks' fine for the 22 year old forward thou, is still going to cost him $550,000 dollars.

Onto regional football action,

And our Singapore Lions hammered Thailand 3-1 in last night's grand final 1st leg clash in the Suzuki Cup.

At the Jalan Besar Stadium, Fahruddin Mustafic's penalty in the 9th minute put the Republic in front.

But just before the hour mark, the Thais equalised through midfielder, Adul Lahsol.

3 minutes later, our Lions took the lead when Aleksander Duric squared the ball to Khairul Amri, who was waiting in the penalty box.

And Amri turned his defender to score in his 3rd successive AFF championship final.

The Singapore fans were up on their feet again just before fulltime, when Baihakki Khaizan scored the Republic's final goal.

The return leg in Bangkok will take place on Saturday.
