Chinese police plan to board vessels in disputed seas

Police in the southern Chinese island province of Hainan will board and search ships which enter what China considers its territorial waters in the disputed South China Sea.

This is according to state media that added such a move could raise tensions further.

The South China Sea is Asia's biggest potential military trouble spot with several Asian countries claiming sovereignty.

China asserts its sovereignty over the stretch of water off its south coast and to the east of mainland Southeast Asia.

This has set Beijing directly against the likes of Hanoi and Kuala Lumpur, which also lay claim to parts of the territory.
