English Premier League Signs New Deal With Barclays Till June 2016

In football news, 

The English Premier League have agreed a new US$185 million, 3-year deal with existing title sponsors, Barclays. 

The extended agreement with the bank will run till June 2016. 

And the extension comes after last month's announcement that U-K broadcasters British Telecoms and BSkyB reportedly signed a 3 year TV deal worth US$4.7 billion. 

Last season, the Premier League was broadcast in 212 territories to more than 650 million homes and an audience of 4.7 billion people. 

Still on English football, 

Tottenham Hotspur have signed defender Jan Vertonghen from Dutch giants, Ajax Amsterdam. 

The 25-year-old had agreed terms and passed his medical to complete the signing yesterday. 

The former Ajax captain will bolster the Spurs defence following the departures of Ledley King and Ryan Nelsen. 

Vertonghen is the 2nd signing for Spurs following midfielder Sigurdsson who joined the club earlier this month.

In local football news, 

StarHub are the new title sponsors of the annual League Cup. 

And in line with this latest tieup, a brand new tournament format was also announced yesterday. 

The 2012 edition of the League Cup, will see an increase in prize money and the tournament will be renamed the StarHub League Cup. 

The revamped competition with 12 clubs, now sees a group stage format for the preliminary rounds. 

The defending champions Albirex Niigata and the top 3 teams of last year's S-league season namely Tampines Rovers, Home United and SAFFC were seeded and drawn into Groups A,B,C and D. 

And the top 2 teams of each group will advance into the quarter-finals and subsequently to the semi-finals.

A total of 4 teams that fail to advance from the group stages will qualify to play in the newly introduced Plate Competition, which comprise a semi-final and final.

The League Cup champions will walk away with the prize money of $30,000, which is an increase of $10,000, while the winners of the new Plate competition will receive $5,000.

And keeping with the changes on the pitch, a new award in the form of Most-Valuable-Player (MVP) of the tournament, will be picked by the media at the end of the Cup campaign. 

The month long tournament starts in 2 weeks. 

Still on local football, 

SAFFC beat Home United 3-0 last night at the Jalan Besar Stadium. 

The victory lifts the Warriors to 5th place while Home United remain in 4th position. 

Meanwhile at the Jurong West Stadium, 

Gombak United edged out Balestier Khalsa 1-0. 

The victory sent Gombak up to 9th spot and Balestier remained in 6th place on the S-league table.
