Fresh fires in New South Wales as threat continues

Fresh blazes have ignited in the Australian state of New South Wales as authorities track a dangerous band of hot air moving north.

The TVNZ news website said firefighters were battling more than 140 blazes across the state this morning.

But up to 30 of the fires are still out of control, destroying a handful of homes and killing thousands of livestock.

A cool change earlier today brought to a close one of the state's worst ever fire days with only one home believed to have been destroyed.

However the reprieve will only be short-lived, with temperatures expected to climb again by the end of the week.
