Gaza violence continues to haunt Middle East
Fighting between Israeli and Hamas troops in Gaza is continuing, despite a worldwide call for restraint in the conflict.
The violence, sparked by the rocket attacks by Hamas on Israel, led to a strong Israeli response.
Civilians have borne the brunt of the casualties, with more than 130 Palestinians and five Israelis dead in the process.
Even as diplomats try to negotiate a truce, hopes of peace could be long in coming, says Dr Damien D. Cheong, Research Fellow at the Centre for National Security in NTU's S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies.
