Liverpool Advance to Last 32 in Europe

In football and the Europa League,

5-time European champions Liverpool survived a late scare to move into the last 32 with a 1-0win over Italian side Udinese. 

Reds midfielder Jordan Henderson's scored the winner after 23 minutes to help Liverpool leapfrog Group A leaders Anzhi Makhachkala. 

Italian striker Antonio Di Natale had a good chance to equalize with the last kick of the game but blazed over the bar. 

The goal would've put Liverpool out of the competition as Anzhi lost 3-1 at Young Boys in Berne. 

The result left all 3 sides on 10 points, but the Russians' better record over the Swiss club in a 3-way head-to-head took them into the knockout stages. 

With the win, Brendan Rodgers' men top Group A to join Tottenham Hotspur, Steaua Bucharest, VfB Stuttgart and Basel as the last 5 clubs through to the knockout stages. 


Spurs beat Panathinaikos 3-1 to take the final Group J slot behind winners Lazio, who eased to a 4-1 win at Maribor. 

Emmanuel Adebayor put Tottenham ahead, while Clint Dempsey and Jermain Defoe grabbed late goals to seal the victory.

Steaua held FC Copenhagen 1-all to progress as Group E winners on 11 points, with Stuttgart in second on 8.

Basel advanced with a goalless draw at Group G's top club Racing Genk .

And holders Atletico Madrid, who are already through to the last-32 , lost 1-0 to Viktoria Plzen to finish 2nd in Group B.
