Liverpool and Everton win at the start of 2013 while Chelsea crash at home

And having crushed Queens Park Rangers 3-0 just 3 nights ago, Liverpool began the new year with a 3-0 thrashing of Sunderland. 

At Anfield this morning, Raheem Sterling broke the deadlock after 19 minutes. 

Luis Suarez made it 2-0 just 7 minutes later. 

And the Uruguayan completed the rout with his 2nd goal just after the break. 

With the win, Liverpool are in 8th position and still 5 points behind Everton. 

The Toffees are in 5th place after today's 2-1 win at St James Park. 

Papiss Cisse gaveNewcastlethe lead after just 2 minutes. 

But the Merseysiders drew level just before halftime, thanks to Leighton Baines. 

And on the hour mark, Victor Anichebe scored the winning goal after coming on as a substitute just 2 minutes earlier. 

Meanwhile, 

Chelsea were stunned 1-0 at home by Queens Park Rangers. 

Shaun Wright Philips scored in the 79th minute for QPR's first win at Stamford Bridge in 2 decades. 

With the loss, the Blues are still 4th on the EPL table while QPR celebrate only their 2nd win in 21 matches.


Over in the Scottish Premier League, 

Celtic moved 9 points clear at the top, after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Motherwell. 

At home, Gary Hooper scored the crucial goal from close range in the 80th minute. 

With the win, Celtic are 9 points ahead of Inverness and Motherwell.


Over to cricket action, 

New Zealand rewrote the history books after being dismissed for 45 by South Africa in Cape Town yesterday. 

It was the lowest Test score in close to 40 years. 

Kane Williamson was the only player to reach double figures in New Zealand's first innings on day 1 of the first Test, as pace bowler Vernon Philander took 5-7. 

The total was the 3rd lowest ever scored by the Kiwis. 

And later in the day, Jacques Kallis became the 4th batsman to reach 13,000 Test runs as South Africa finished on 252- 3.
