In Spanish football, 

Lionel Messi has agreed terms to a new contract at Barcelona, that'll keep him at the club until 2018. 

The Argentinian international reached an agreement with the Catalan side, to extend his current deal which was supposed to end in about 3 years. 

Messi will officially sign the new deal in the coming weeks.

Still on football, 

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has been voted the best French footballer for 2012. 

Winning it for the 2nd consecutive year, the award was presented to him last night by former French international Zinedine Zidane at the Bernebeu Stadium. 

Organised by France Football Magazine, the 24 year old won ahead of Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery and Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris. 

Award recipients were declared through a voting process carried out by a panel of former winners, including Zidane. 

Last season, Benzema scored 21 goals in the La Liga and helped Real win the title. 

Onto cricket action, 

Uncapped fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan destroyed South Africa's top order, to get New Zealand off to a winning start in a Twenty20 match at the City Oval. 

New Zealand posted a modest 140 for 7 after winning the toss and batting. 

The South African 2nd stringers were soon in deep trouble at 23 for 4, before limping to 116 for 9 to give the visitors a 24-run win.
