North Korean Launch Fails

North Korea has launched a long-range rocket but South Korea has reported that it failed and disintegrated shortly after blast off.

The rocket was launched at 7.39am local time.

South Korea's Defence Ministry says the rocket failed in the first minutes of the launch after it broke up and crashed into the Yellow sea, about 200 kilometers off Kunsan, a city on its west coast.

Japan says the rocket had flown about 120 kilometers into the air.

Washington has also confirmed the launch of the rocket with some reports citing US officials saying it may have broken up ten minutes into its flight.

The U.N. Security Council has said it will meet later today to discuss a possible response to North Korea's rocket launch.
