Obama and Romney have lunch

US President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney have met for a private lunch at the White House.

In their first encounter since November's Presidential election, the former foes sat down alone in the private dining room off the Oval Office.

Mr Romney left an hour and twenty minutes later from a side door of the West Wing, avoiding reporters.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said both Mr Obama and Mr Romney pledged to stay in touch, particularly if opportunities to work together on shared interests arise in the future.

Prior to the meeting, there was a moment of drama for Mr Romney as his motorcade arrived at the White House.

A man approached the vehicles and was then arrested after he started arguing with Secret Service officers.
