Powerful storm nearing Philippines: forecasters
Philippine authorities have warned the public to take precautions for what could be the most powerful storm to hit the country this year.
Packing gusts of up to 220 kilometres per hour, Typhoon Bopha was 1,000 kilometres southeast of the Philippines as of this morning.
It is forecast to make landfall between Tuesday and Wednesday.
Heavy rain from the advancing storm is expected to hit the central Visayas region and the main southern island of Mindanao from tonight.
The Philippines is battered by about 20 typhoons a year, some of them destructive.
Bopha is the 16th so far this year.
In August, nearly 100 people were killed and more than a million were displaced by heavy flooding caused by a series of storms.
