Singaporeans not target of crime in Johor, says state's police chief

Johor Chief of Police Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff says Singaporeans are not a target of crime in Johor.

Mr Mohd Mokhtar says the crimes against Singaporeans were crimes of opportunity, which could have been prevented with adequate precautions.

Speaking to Singapore and Malaysian media in Johor Baru today, he adds that it is "beyond all doubt" that Johor is safe for visitors.

The police chief says there has been a 35 per cent drop in crime cases in Johor between 2008 and 2013.

And out of some 17,000 crime cases last year, only 397 involved Singaporeans.

As for kidnappings, only two cases between 2008 and 2013 involved Singaporeans.

Mr Mohd Mokhtar says Johor is fully committed to fighting crime, especially in the Iskandar economic zone.

For example, the Johor police is working with the Iskandar Regional Development Authority to build up community police posts and an auxiliary police force.

Singaporeans are the biggest investors in Iskandar, with investments worth RM11 billion in 2013.

The next biggest investors are Spaniards, with investments worth RM4.2 billion.
