Spurs climb to 4th in EPL and Chelsea are humiliated in the Club World Cup Final
In English football action,
Jan Vertonghen broke the deadlock to send Tottenham Hotspur back into the top 4 of the Premier League, with last night's 1-0 home win against Swansea City.
The Belgian international defender scored in the 75th minute at White Hart Lane with a well-struck right-footed shot.
With the win, Spurs leapfrogged over Everton to take 4th position and level on 29 points with 3rd-placed Chelsea, who have a game in hand.
And in last night's other clash,
West Bromwich Albion and West Ham United played out a goal-less draw.
The result at the Hawthorns keeps WBA in 6th spot while the Hammers are in 11th position.
Still on football,
Corinthians are the winners of the 2012 FIFA Club World Cup.
Last night in Yokohama, the South American champions edged out Chelsea 1-0 in the grand final.
Pablo Guerrero scored the solitary goal in the 66th minute of play.
The defeat means that Chelsea are the 1st UEFA Champions League holders to fail to win the Club World Cup in 6 years.
Over in regional football action,
Sporting Lisbon are the inaugural winners of the NexLions Cup.
Yesterday at the Jalan Besar Stadium, the Portuguese club's under-19 squad beat their Liverpool counterparts 2-0 in the final.
In front of a crowd of 4,000, it was Luka Stojanovic who broke the deadlock in the 46th minute.
And Luis Cortez scored Sporting's 2nd goal as a result of a counter-attack just before fulltime.
Meanwhile in the earlier match for 3rd and 4th placing,
Manchester United's Under-19s beat a Singapore Selection 2-1.
In regional football news,
All 7,000 tickets that were reserved for Singapore supporters for the Suzuki Cup 1st leg final, were snapped up within 3 hours yesterday morning.
Braving the heavy rain, fans had started queuing at the Jalan Besar Stadium ticket counter since 6pm on Saturday evening.
And due to the lack of proper barricades and fencing, the queue stretched for more than 600 metres.
That resulted in several online complaints, when late-comers simply jumped the queue by joining their friends who were already in the ticketing-line earlier.
The 1st leg clash against Thailand takes place this Wednesday in Singapore and the return leg in Bangkok is on Saturday.
