But the 17-time Grand Slam champion struggled in his opening round.
Federer dropped the 1st set before recovering to beat Tunisian wild card Malek Jaziri 5-7, 6-0, 6-2.
The 31 year-old said he felt pressured to win, especially since his opponent has been out with an injury since October.
Federer, who plans to take a two-month break from mid-March, now faces the winner of the match between Albert Montanes and Marcel Granoyers.
